With CP+ on the horizon and assumptions that Canon will be producing a number of mirrorless cameras in 2020, rumors are rife, with a 45-megapixel R5 arriving soon, now believed to be accompanied by a 20-megapixel R6, according to Canon Rumors.
From what the rumor mills are suggesting, the naming conventions may prove to be in line with Canon’s existing EF-mount cameras, with the R1 geared for sports, an R5 that’s more in line with the 5D line — albeit shooting 20 frames per second — and now an R6 that’s said to feature a 20-megapixel sensor, IBIS, 12 fps mechanical and 20 fps electronic shutter, and 4K 60p video. This would be vaguely in line as a successor to the 6D Mark II, but with a ridiculous burst speed.
Alongside these three, there might be good reason to assume that Canon will eventually produce a R5S, a high-resolution version of the R5 that’s in line with the 5DS, shooting slightly poorer video but with a much higher resolution for stills. If all of these rumors are true, Canon seems intent on making 20 frames per second using the electronic shutter fairly standard, so it will be fascinating to see whether that’s trimmed a little for this high-resolution version.
If we do see an R5 and an R6 appear in the next couple of weeks, speculation will intensify as to whether a R7 is due to follow — an APS-C, RF-mount camera geared for sports and wildlife, and perhaps video performance. Canon faces something of a dilemma when it comes to APS-C cameras, having no compatibility between EOS-M and RF mounts.
